Lot Essay

'The most difficult part for people to accept is that painting is not a reflection on an object, but something which has been lived, a making. We are involved on the first day that we traced a line and laid down a colour on a surface, and the painter's questioning revolves around these facts. It is from there, that the vanity of believing in a random intervention in the artist's sphere of theories suggested by the outside world, comes from.'

(The artist quoted).

Christie's Dubai is proud to support the forthcoming projects of the Succession nShafic Abboud by including the strikingly large and vibrant composition by internationally acclaimed Lebanese painter Shafic Abboud (lot 10, Part I), as well as these two dazzling compositions by the same artist, respectively painted in 1960 and 1980. The sale proceeds of all three lots will benefit three different exciting projects undertaken by the Succession Shafic Abboud: a digital Catalogue raisonné of Shafic Abboud's entire oeuvre, a monograph on the artist due to be published in 2014 by SKIRA and an academic book based on Abboud's archives, correspondence and artist's books.
