With TAG Heuer Chronometer Certificate and large and heavy metal and black box signed SLR Chronograph on the top of the lid and with the brand names Mercedes-Benz as well as TAG Heuer on the inside of the lid with their respective logos. The box, which is opened by flipping up a small lid and pressing on a button, contains another small square black box, as well as instructions.
In as new condition, the present watch was part of a limited edition made in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz in 2004. To celebrate 20 years of partnership, TAG Heuer renewed and extended its partnership with Formula 1's Team West McLaren, Mercedes and its then drivers, Kimi Raïkkïnen and David Coulthard.
The idea for the SLR Chronograph was conceived in the F1 paddock during an encounter between then TAG Heuer CEO and President Jean-Christophe Babin and the director of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Project, Klaus Nesser. The chronograph was designed exclusively for Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren owners by the TAG Heuer product development teams in La Chaux-de-Fond, together with the Geneva watchmaker, Jean-François Ruchonnet.
The design of the dial mimics a sports car dashboard. Equipped with a distinctive aesthetic, the minutes on the watch can be read regulator-style by following the big central luminous minute hand around the dial while the hours are read on the 12 hours counter at midnight. The other three subsidiary dials are for constant seconds and the classic chronograph functions for measuring the elapse of 30 minutes and 12 hours. Both the TAG Heuer shield and Mercedes-Benz logo are displayed on the black dial.
Apart from the unusual dial, the case design of the watch is also innovative with the two chronograph buttons placed on the front of the case instead of the right side. This ergonomic intervention was made by the design team to draw a parallel with the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren's unique steering wheel gearshift. To top the clever style features, the crown of the watch, adorned with the Mercedes-Benz star, is nicely set into the right side of the band, which has been crafted to resemble two SLR grill patterns for the sport car's side-mounted exhausts.
At the time, a purchase of the sleek Mercedes-Benz SLR Mc Laren, itself a limited-production sports car, was the prerogative to obtaining this limited edition TAG Heuer SLR Chronograph.
