The present watch is a very fine example of Rolex reference 116519, still retaining the green Rolex sticker on the back and with crisp hallmarks and milling.
Part of the 15600 series of Cosmograph Daytona chronographs, the reference 116519 is a very elegant white gold model issued with leather strap and Rolex deployant clasp. Rolex introduced the 16500 series of watches with automatic chronograph movements in 1988, effectively putting an end to the era of hand-wound Daytonas.
The 16500 series, which includes references 16520, 16523, 16528 and 16518, as well as the present 16519, is designed to be water-resistant up to 100 meters (or 330 feet) and comes with the characteristic colour contrast between the main dial and registers track. The registers tracks feature a metal edge.
Reference 116519 is illustrated in 100 Years of Rolex by F. & G. Mondani, 2008, pages 277 and 280, as well as in Rolex Daytona - A Legend is Born by Carlo Pergola, Stefano Mazzariol and Giovanni Dosso, pp. 204-217.
