Lot Essay
This "sixty-sixty two" is a superb premium example of what many Rolex collectors and scholars consider Rolex's most prestigious model ever made. Not only does the present watch impress with its excellent condition but also ticks every box on a purist's check list when it comes to originality and preservation.
The dial retains its original factory finish and has never been touched up or restored. In fact, it displays a wonderful off-white grainé surface beautifully harmonizing with the subtle grey blue outer date numbers. The stars, all aligned, have never been removed and are all centered by the original luminescent highlights which have turned to a warm sandy colour. The calendar windows retain their sharply faceted edges and the seconds track around the moon aperture is well-defined and perfectly aligned.
The case retains excellent definition with crisp and clearly readable reference and serial number in between the lugs. Underneath the lugs, one can still find the original factory satin-finish and a beautifully preserved Swiss gold mark. Naturally the original Super Oyster crown is also present. Another blessing for the demanding collector is the presence of the luxurious and heavy braided bracelet with the correct signed clasp.
It comes to little surprise that one of the world leading scholars, John Goldberger, chose to illustrate this exact watch in his widely respected Rolex Tome 100 Superlative Rolex Watches. This additional fact should underline that the present reference 6062 is widely acknowledged as one of the world's most beautiful and best preserved examples of this landmark reference.

In the second half of the 1940s, following the launch of the definitive "Oyster" case shape, Rolex introduced a variety of different watches with a diversity of movements for this case. It was predominantly used for the perpetual model with date window, later named DateJust, until the 1950s when a second aperture was added introducing the weekday at 12 o'clock, the celebrated Day-Date. The "Oyster" case was also produced with different chronograph movements, either with a constant seconds register or three subsidiary dials including the hour register. The most complicated chronograph version cased in the "Oyster" style is the famous "Dato-Compax", later nick-named "Killy" by collectors, featuring a full calendar on top of the chronograph mechanism.
The top-of-the-line version however was reference 6062, fitted with the in-house automatic movement, upgraded with a full calendar and moon phase indication. In production only during a few years in the first half of the 1950s, this model is considered the most important Oyster model ever made by Rolex. Reference 6062 was available in yellow gold, pink gold and stainless steel.
