Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with white gold bracelet in 1971 and its subsequent sale on 24 April 1974.

This highly unusual and attractive Patek Philippe wristwatch is one of only three white gold examples of reference 4121/1 to have appeared at auction to date.

Reference 4121/1 was produced from 1971 to 1973 in a small series of white gold and yellow gold examples only.

The fragmented and multi-shaped mirror-like pieces on the striking blue dial have replaced the usual numerals, catching the eye and adding a playful note to the ensemble. The pattern is repeated on the equally attractive links of the bracelet. The careful craftsmanship applied in the making of this unusual timepiece is further enhanced by the nice frame around the dial and bracelet links, as well as the bark-finish decoration along the sides of the watch. This frame, which will immediately be associated with a delightful canvas painting, only accentuates the small fragments with their random shapes found on the dial and bracelet links. The bracelet links are all slightly arched on the back, allowing for comfortable wearing of the watch. All in all, the piece is visually distinctive and should delight its wearer, giving rise to some thoughtful reflection.
