Lot Essay

This work is registered in the Archive of the Karel Appel Foundation.

'When I paint, the present is the only time and becomes everything. The now is all. No past. No future.
There is no defense, nothing to be cleared, nothing to be destroyed. The canvas is ready to be beyond consciousness. Just be. Beyond the human dualities. Only in this non-dual work together with my painting I lose myself, my body also. In my painting the form becomes vibrations, it enters the formless form, formless existence I paint - vibrations of colours.'
(Karel Appel quoted in A. Frankenstein, Karel Appel, New York 1980, p. 107).
