oval, 2.7/8 in. (73 mm.) high, gilt-metal frame with plaited hair surround, the reverse with opalescent glass aperture and plaited hair surround, the sides engraved 'Charles Francis Plowden Born 1 February 1781 - Painted by Rich.d<\sup> Cosway July 1795'

Lot Essay

Charles Francis Plowden was gazetted Cornet in the 15th Light Dragoons without purchase from 27 May 1795. He was transferred to the 5th Regiment of Foot on promotion to Lieutenant by purchase, from 11 October 1798. His battalion fought under the Duke of York in Holland in 1799. He died in October 1800. The present miniature may be a memento of his first commission.
