Lot Essay

George Warner Allen's paintings of English pastoral idylls led critics to describe him as a Neo-Romantic artist. The strong colour contrasts in the figures and the chromatic intensity of this work are hallmarks evident in Allen's later paintings such as Picnic at Wittenham, 1947-48 (Tate, London).
