Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mrs Hanako Kawanchi of the University of Osaka for pointing out similarities with the Wintzler family portrait by Gotthardt de Wedig in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne. She believes the artist must have been familiar with the oeuvre of Gortzius Geldorp, and was influenced by portrait painters from Cologne of a generation later.

More from Old Masters & 19th Century Art - including Dutch Impressionism.
