Lot Essay

It has been suggested that Francesco Zuccarellli painted the present lot during his second visit to London (1765-71). The picture is painted on copper which is exceptional for his oeuvre.

In 1768 Zuccarelli was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts, London, together with other prominent artists of international reputation like Thomas Gainsborough, Benjamin West and Angelika Kauffmann.

More from Old Masters & 19th Century Art - including Dutch Impressionism.
