Lot Essay

A piece that shows the range and technical versatility of Cheong Soo Pieng, Village Scene (Lot 7064) is unique for its medium of batik. Cheong Soo Pieng learnt batik from Chuah Thean Teng, a Penang-based artist and this work, with the outline of the seated women figures in white, with other details coloured, exemplify perfectly how the wax-resist technique of batik was used on the work resulting in the white uncoloured lines.
