Lot Essay

In a January 1913 letter to the first owner of the present work, Hassam wrote, "The Bathers is perhaps the best title for the little picture that you purchased of me. I think it is one of the best of my small panels of the nude out of doors. Anyway they are subjects that interest me greatly."

We would like to thank Kathleen M. Burnside for her assistance with cataloguing this work.

This painting will be included in Stuart P. Feld and Kathleen M. Burnside's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
