Lot Essay

Stephen Scott Young painted Old Shoes in the summer of 1992 at Beach House on Harbour Island in the Bahamas. Both the artist and his subject jumped the fence surrounding this picturesque private property to get to the isolated corner depicted in the present work. The boy depicted is one of several youths that modeled for the artist at the time. The boy had come barefoot, but Young had him pose in his own paint-splattered shoes for the present work.
