Lot Essay

Entang Wiharso, born 1965, is an important figure of the post-1965 generation of Jojgakarta artist. He recently participated in the 55th Venice Bienale 2013, one of the only few artists to represent the Indonesian Pavilion. The conceptual framework of his art generally circles around his ideas and concerns regarding identity and self, about appropriation, and post-colonialism. Unknown Black Goat (Lot 572) is part of his body of work featuring black goats, a icon of an outcast in a flock of white goats. Here, Entang Wiharso identifies himself as something of an outsider, someone being able to observe and provide insight to what is happening within. His black goat is an agent of social commentary and change.
