Lot Essay

Wedhar Riyadi, Uji 'Hahan' Handoko, Nano Warsono, Oky Rey Montha, Lugas Syllabus and Andre AC Tanama belong to a generation of Yogyakarta artists who have emerged onto the Indonesian art scene in the past few years, collectively described as the 'Jogja Agropop' artists. A great deal of the imageries in their works have been derived from cartoon, anime and popular culture, but combined and transmuted into dense, overloaded pictorial surfaces that are narrative and symbol-driven. Not directly or overtly political, their works nevertheless offers insight and criticism of society, drawing upon popular saying, traditional cultural references and folklore, and are also, at times, centred on the predilections of being a contemporary artist today, particularly in the post-boom era. As a generation, they are not adverse to their works being received by art and non-artworld viewers and as such, their works run acriss a gamut of medium including drawings, murals, comics, stickers, posters, illustrations, and limited edition toys and clothing.
