Caroline Ryan Foulke (1910-1987) was the granddaughter of Thomas Fortune Ryan, an American tobacco and railway magnate during the turn of the 20th Century.
Mrs. Foulke greatly admired the work of designer David Webb, and his designs are well represented in her collection. She particularly admired his use of sharp, definite colors in enamel and was pleased by his fondness for the ram's head motif which has been used by goldsmiths since the time of the Sythians and the early Greeks. To Mrs. Foulke it represented Aries, her sign of the Zodiac. To her wide circle of friends, many of the qualities of Aries - an innocent, trusting nature, a desire for privacy, faith in the basic honesty of others, along with a courageous and determined personality, seemed to typify Caroline Ryan Foulke exactly.
