Lot Essay

It is very rare to find original printing plates of important subjects by the great printmakers of the past, such as Jacques Callot's Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. Copper was too valuable to remain unused once the plate was no longer printed from. The present plate however has survived beautifully, complete with the paper folder in which the last printer to own the plate kept it.
