Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1991 and its subsequent sale on December 10th of the same year. Further accompanied by an undated Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin.

To the best of our knowledge this watch has never before been offered in public.

According to our research, the present watch is one of ten examples with Roman numerals to appear at auction to date.

The reference 3940 was produced from 1985 through 2007, in three series. The last series, which was produced from 1998, included the dial variation with white dial and black painted Roman numerals, as opposed to the more commonly seen silvered dial with applied gold indexes.

Reference 3940 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by M. Huber & A. Banbery, second edition, pages 292-293.
