Michael Clark is an extraordinary dancer and choreographer. Since he emerged in the 1980s as a prodigy at London’s Royal Ballet School, he has become a defining cultural figure and has remained at the cutting edge of dance for more than twenty-five years. He launched his own company in 1984, collaborating with – among others – such compelling artists as Leigh Bowery, Sarah Lucas, Peter Doig and Charles Atlas. From the outset, Michael’s performances have been marked by a mixture of technical rigour and iconoclasm, intense and fine-tuned choreography intersecting with elements of punk, Dada, pop and rock. His productions repeatedly break new ground, provoking and electrifying audiences. His recent evening of work at London’s Barbican Theatre garnered widespread acclaim, with The Guardian’s critic Sanjoy Roy justly observing that “throughout the evening, the dancers’ prodigious command and affectless efficiency make them look superhuman.” Dance is an art form with extremely limited funding and no saleable product. It depends on a sustained momentum of training and performance, which needs constant financing. In recent years, the Michael Clark Company has mounted a highly ambitious and internationally acclaimed programme, producing a record number of new commissions for traditional dance venues such as The Barbican Centre, London (where it has been a resident company since 2005) and The Lincoln Center, New York (2008), as well as for contemporary art museums in London and New York and innovative music venues including the legendary Barrowlands in Glasgow. Michael has continued to collaborate with contemporary artists, designers and musicians such as Trojan, Hussein Chalayan, Big Bottom, Cerith Wyn Evans and Jarvis Cocker. His productions inspire while transcending categorisation. The remarkable productions the company presented at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall (2011) and at the Whitney Museum’s Biennial (2012), were largely financed by our own fundraising efforts, pretty much emptying our coffers. Because Michael and his productions are so inspired by – and equally an inspiration to – artists, we have asked a group of contemporary artists to each donate a work of significance to a forthcoming auction in support of the Michael Clark Company. We urgently need funds to keep the Michael Clark Company on its upward and singular trajectory, allowing it to continue to hire the dancers of exceptional ability that Michael needs to create his work. The proceeds from sales of these works – by artists who have an affinity or long-term connection with the Michael Clark Company – will be an invaluable stimulus to one of the world’s most dynamic and distinctive dance companies.
