Lot Essay
Sickert spent each summer in Dieppe from 1885 until he went to live there permanently in the autumn of 1898. The church of St Rémy, built between 1522 and 1640 is Dieppe's second largest church. The present work was almost certainly painted circa 1900-1901 (judging not only by the handling and colour, but also by the growth of the tree). Sickert returned to this scene in 1913 by which time the tree in the background was much taller. The work was signed much later, during the second half of the 1920s when Sickert adopted his second name of Richard in preference to Walter and frequently used this mode of signature (Rd St).
