Lot Essay
'...I think theres nothing more fundamental than drawing. For instance, if I show someone the way, and draw it on paper, showing him how the roads go, then Im drawing of course. Drawing is really nothing other than planning: one embodies, represents, gives experiential form to something or a spatial relationship, or just relationships of size. And I think one should remember that we have all drawn a huge, huge amount in our lives.... Everyone can draw. As long as he has hands he can draw of course; and even if he hasnt he can still draw with his feet. And what arises from this awareness, as an exercise or whatever naturally something arises is certainly something quite diverse. So drawing is something very fundamental...' (J. Beuys, quoted in 'Conversation with Joseph Beuys: What is art?', V. Harlan (ed.), Joseph Beuys: What is Art?, Forest Row 2004, pp. 24-25)
