Lot Essay

The Hon. Elizabeth Charlotte Eden (d. 1847), was the third daughter of the prominent politician and financial expert William Eden, 1st Lord Auckland (1744-1814), who had served as Chief Secretary for Ireland, Ambassador to Spain, and President of the Board of Trade. She married Francis Godolphin (1777-1850), later 1st Baron Godolphin, second son of Francis, 5th Duke of Leeds, in 1800. Her father-in-law was also a prominent politician who had served as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1783-91). Their son succeeded as the 8th Duke of Leeds.
