Lot Essay
Born in 1969, Wang Xingwei is considered one of the most mature and influential artists in the discourse of Chinese contemporary art. His artistic style has undergone different phases, resulting in great diversity. Having been experimenting with distinct styles, concepts, and formalities since mid-1990s, reoccurring historical and cultural elements began to proliferate in Wang's art. Crimson blocks and a warm colour scheme cast in 2004's Donkey in the Snow (Lot 6) present an image that is the complete opposite of pure and white snow, augmenting the sense of solitude and piercing coldness. This unique treatment has resulted in a powerful yet witty imagery.
