Lot Essay
Born in Jiaozuo, Henan in 1934, Jin Shangyi was appointed the vice-chancellor of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1983, and later promoted to chancellor in 1987. During his term, he had nourished a number of talented tartists specialized in oil paintings. Jin Shangyi attended the oil paintingClass by Konstantin Mefodyevich Maximov at the China Central Academy of Fine Art to study the basics styling and colouring. Later, he took a different approach to incorporate the Neo-classicism figures and the vividity of traditional Chinese painting.
In the late 1970s, the artist started creating political paintings to depict normal people's everyday life.
The Soldier (Lot 14) is inspired by events happening around the artist. He applies broader brushes and smaller dots on the warrior's face to respectively create tension and looseness in the composition. For the use of colours, the uniform reflects a steady and modest sense, putting emphasis on the red star and badge which symbolise hope and devotion. The background is deliberately painted with a lighter colour while the artist employed carefree brushstrokes to create the depth in the composition. Jing Shangyi is keen on figurative painting and painting and always shows his concern for Mainland China. A soldier is born to defend his country. In The Soldier, a soldier of ethnic minority from the People's Liberation Army is equipped with cartridge belt and rifle, standing still in the middle of the picture. He has a heroic manner and a static face, staring into distant places like a watch guard. Red collar badge and cockade are the symbol of that era. Being confused and lost in the Chinese society during the post-Cultural Revolution period, Jin is in constant quest for idealism that's both noble and pure.
