Lot Essay

"I was painting inside a Hui-style building. A soft and gentle glow spilled down f rom the sky light, filtering out many objects. At this time, many concerns of the moment remained; people still lived here and could be heard walking back and forth. Confronting that remarkable source of light, a strange uncertainty came over me. Could this be the past, or the present? In that instant of confusion, I was convinced I could capture it in paint. I had the skil l to portray it, and the impulse to paint burned strongly within me."

During his college years, Wei Jia discovered the painting aspect of prints and studies colour press technique, which later became the foundation of his unique artistic style and use of colours. In 2004, he began to break away from lithograph and turned to the large canvas as a means of furthering his study of security and insecurity. Over the course of Wei Jia's unusual evolution as a painter, his distinctive character and sense of ambiguity were gradually shaped. An awareness of life's insecurity runs through all his painting, as does the feeling of loneliness, shared by all men in common. Wei Jia once remarked:
"Day by day we grow, and day by day we age. Although we prosper in many ways, we are constantly losing things, and that which has been lost can never be recovered." He believes this sense of insecurity is an abstract concept, which is expressed in painting as a boundless dark night. Within this inky darkness a gleam of light can be seen. The source of this light conveys a sense of security and warmth. However should one actually find themselves enveloped within this light source, they will find it to be quite meager, and the anxiety will still be present. The so-called sense of security is in fact very limited and defies facile definition.
