Extensively influenced by The New Literati Painting movement, techniques applied in Li Jin's paintings emphasise the relations - associations and relevance - between calligraphy and writings, where the ink and the lines which compose the strokes override traditional calligraphy in the making of forms. Vast use of colourful paints defines Li's work, as to shed lights on the subject matter - a contextualized scene that illustrates the lazy, hedonistic, and playful atmosphere propelled by the modern commercial society. Compared to traditional ink paintings, the Li Jin's art is highly experimental in a manner that is reminiscent of Caravaggio's approach in confronting humanity directly. Li filled Aroma with colourful blocks and captivating figures, thus delivering a message that goes against traditional Chinese aesthetics of purposefully preservaing unpainted space.
In the mid-1990s, scholars were concerned about commercialisation and the hedonism ideology that came along with it in China. The characters regardless of gender in Li Jin's paintings are the best remarks of this notion. He employees an easy approachable in presenting eroticism and gluttony, and to appropriate these two subjects as human instincts, eventually justifying a man's right to enjoy life. The artist uses pointing, titling, and sharpening brushstrokes in the formation of the written title of the work, naming it Aroma without explaining if the arousing scent comes from food or that of a person.
