Lot Essay

With Rolex Guarantee punched with the serial number, tag and fitted presentation box and outer packaging.

The present watch is a beautiful example of a first generation reference 16528, characterized by what is called among collectors a "floating dial" and a bezel calibrated to 200 units.

A "floating dial" will show the designation "Cosmograph" with a marked distance from the previous "Superlative Chronometer" and "Officially Certified" lines. In later dial versions the designation Cosmograph is found immediately below the other descriptive lines. In conjunction with its floating dial, this early version reference 16528 boasts the correct version of the tachymetre scale calibrated to 200 units and not the 400 units found in subsequent versions.

The watch further stands out by virtue of its attractive, striking appearance and excellent overall condition with sharp hallmarks on the underside of the lugs, as well as crisp milling to the case back.

The desirability of this early reference 16528 is further heightened by the presence of the original Guarantee and box, making it a very collectible and complete classic.

Part of the 15600 series of Cosmograph Daytona chronographs introduced in 1988, the reference 116528 is a very elegant yellow gold model. Rolex introduced the 16500 series of watches with automatic chronograph movements in 1988, effectively putting an end to the era of hand-wound Daytonas.

The 16500 series, which includes references 16518, 16519, 16520 and 16523, as well as the present 16528, is designed to be water-resistant up to 100 meters (or 330 feet) and comes with the characteristic colour contrast between the main dial and registers track. The registers tracks feature a metal edge.
