This watch is an early and rare example of the Cartier Basculante model, furthermore reaching us in truly original, unmolested condition. Exquisitely art deco, the ingenious design allows for the case to be turned backside up. This secondary configuration has the double advantage of offering extra protection to the dial, and of giving the possibility to the wearer to show a hypothetical engraving on the caseback.
This design is so timeless that Cartier re-introduced it to the market in the early 2000s. Of course, to a collector the original model, such as the present lot, will prove immensely more satisfying and rewarding.
