"John's physical presence at CalArts was before my time, but his impact could be felt in my life long before my attendance there, growing up
in Southern California. He was one of the first contemporary artists
whom I was exposed to, and I can remember having my first 'art can do
this' moments when looking at his National City works. His presence in the formative years of the institution, as well as the presence of all the artists he taught later on were integral in making CalArts and
myself what we are today."
