Lot Essay

In the Frank Tenney Johnson archives at the McCracken Research Library, Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Singing to the Steers is captioned: "All is quiet on the bedding grounds, and the lone night herder whiles away the long hours by singing many verses of a plaintive cowboy song. The steers are chewing their cuds in contentment, and all is well on the open range."
