Lot Essay
In his Armorial Général of 1884, Rietstap records three branches of the Lantschot family, in 's-Hertogenbosch, Leiden and Brabant. Little is known of Cornelis Lantschot, the sitter in this portrait, other than that he appears to have owned an almshouse in Antwerp to which he left various objects, an inventory of which was drawn up on 11 May 1661 (see E. Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen uit de zeventiende eeuw, Brussels, 1995, VIII, p. 206).
