After the Mask, Hospital, and Meat series, Zheng Fanzhi began a new series call chaotic strokes series, which was a stylistic breakthrough for the artist. Meandering and entangling, these rapid brushstrokes and lines are a reflection of his ten years of life in the fast paced metropolis like Beijing, that was contradictory, chaotic, passionate and violent. In the work Andy Warhol (Lot 526), Zeng depicts the iconic Pop artist with his hand holding up his head in deep thought, while staring straight at the spectators. His eyes pierce through interweaving lines, demonstrating his confidence in his artistic achievements.
Covered by chaotic and dynamic lines, the character looks even more peaceful and comfortable. The Colours changes according to the direction of the rhythmic lines. Bright sky integrates with Warhol's noted grey hair, uniting the canvas. In Handshake (Lot 527), Zheng represents the historic meeting between Chinese and American political leaders with his famous scrambling lines, which blur their identities like a mask, which implies hypocrisy in international politics. Although spectators can't read the circumstances via facial expressions, but the energetic lines not only create visual tension, but also offer clues. Lines, connecting back and forth between the two faces, creates sparks. Broad torsos divide the scene, while the handshake is entwined by twisted lines. Black and whites outfits pose dramatic contrasts.
