Starting at the end of the 1960's, Rolex began producing the references 6262 and 6264. This new generation of Daytonas featured on the 6262 a metal bezel graduated to 200 units, and on the 6264 a black plastic bezel. They also featured the 727 caliber, a modified version of the Valjoux movement used on all of Rolex's manually wound production until 1987, when it was replaced by the Zenith El Primero caliber.
The present example is an captivating specimen of the 6262 reference, featuring subsidiary dials that have aged to a rich brown, with several different shades found in each register. The color of the registers stands out in stark contrast to the silver dial and steel bezel and case, immediately drawing the viewer's eye to this color-change. Over the years, the colors changed from black to the attractive, multi-toned brown color they presently are now.
Reference 6262 is illustrated and described in Rolex Daytona - A Legend is Born by Carlo Pergola, Stefano Mazzariol, & Giovanni Dosso, pp. 110-130, in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda by Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 320-324, as well as in 100 Superlative Rolex Watches by John Goldberger, p. 256.
