Lot Essay

Although it has been associated in the past with both Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) and Cornelis Claesz. van Wieringen (circa 1576-1643), this drawing can be confidently given to Jan Pynas on the basis of stylistic similarities with a View of the Tiber in Rome in a private collection (Fig. 1; P. Schatborn and L. van Sloten, Old Drawings, New Names, exhib. cat., Amsterdam, Museum Het Rembrandthuis, 2014, no. 58). The use of tight, curved lines to represent the clouds is particularly similar, as is the use of hatching combined with brushwork to render the forms.
