Lot Essay

A preparatory study for van Slingelandt's painting of A cottage interior with a woman by a cradle (Fig. 1). The picture formed part of the founding collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich in 1836, but has since disappeared and which was probably destroyed during the damage caused to the museum by the bombing of Munich in 1943-44. The picture shows the cradle viewed from the same angle, but with a baby sleeping inside.
