Lot Essay

This picture was executed during Savery's period in Utrecht, where he moved in 1619. While the landscape is very typical of the artist, Müllenmeister (op. cit.) has observed that the animals are possibly painted by his nephew Hans Savery the Younger (1589–1654) who was working in his studio in Utrecht, and whose painting technique is more stippled than that of his uncle.
