“The step paintings from the mid-60s develop from the previous series of shelf paintings, the tiled steps with checkerboard pattern ascended from the floor to the bottom of the picture.
The idea for this drawing was to use the perspective of a tiled floor with legs to create the illusion of a shallow space that countered the self-evidently flat surface of the canvas.”
