Lot Essay

In his lifetime, French-born designer and illustrator, Achille Lucien Mauzan forged an illustrious career as a poster artist whose expressive style guaranteed his legacy as one of the most original and prolific poster designers of the Twentieth Century. Despite his French heritage and training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, Achille Mauzan began developing his unique illustrative style after moving to Italy in 1905, and perfected his art while living and working in Argentina, after 1926.
The work of Mauzan is at once satirical, perceptive and witty, and always focused on how best to endorse the product or service in question. Employing realist techniques, along with the comic and the burlesque, Mauzan excelled in translating a vast array of advertising concepts into powerful imagery that intrigued and engaged its international consumer audience.
In this poster, he has chosen potent symbols and allegorical allusions to powerfully convey the relief of rheumatic pain
