Lot Essay

Hawkes & Son, 28 Leicester Square, was founded in 1889 by William Hawkes in partnership with Jules Prudence Riviere, a French bandmaster who arrived in England in 1857 and was one of the first originators of promenade concerts. The business merged with Boosey in the 1930s.
