OTTOMAN TURKEY, CIRCA 1580
Of typical form with angular handle, the white ground decorated in turquoise, cobalt-blue and bole-red with repeating bands of small turquoise cloud motifs joined by cobalt-blue dots, bands of red and white strapwork above and below, the handle with cobalt-blue accents, rim chips with small areas of restoration
7½in. (19.2cm.) high; 4¾in. (12cm.) diam. at rim

Fragments from Iznik tankards with similar cloud decoration were found in the excavations at Iznik (Oktay Aslanapa, Serare Yetkin and Ara Altun, The Iznik Tile Kiln Excavations (The Second Round: 1981-1988), Ankara, 1989, p.247).
