Mitte der 1930er Jahre realisierte Le Corbusier seine ersten Collagen mit dem Papier der Marke Salubra, für die er sowohl eine Farbpalette als auch eine Motivserie entwickelt hat. Von den ursprünglich über 30 entworfenen Collagen reproduzierte Le Corbusier 19 in seinem grossen autobiografischen Werk Le poème de l'angle droit aus dem Jahre 1948. Zugunsten dieser neuen Collage-Entwürfe nahm der Künstler einige seiner bisherigen Themen wieder auf. In unserer Collage Main et silex, 1930/51 verwendete er 1951 ein Thema, zu dem er 1930 und 1932 schon zwei Gemälde realisiert hatte. Dies erklärt die beiden auf dem Werk angegebenen Daten 30 und 51.
Der Feuerstein (Silex) unserer Komposition ist der Prototyp, den Le Corbusier Objet à réaction poétique nannte, ein durch Zufall oder die Natur bedingtes, organisch geformtes Objekt. Diese Objekte wie Stein, gebrauchter Handschuh etc. kommen ab 1928 vom jeweiligen Kontext losgelöst häufig in Le Corbusiers Gemälden vor. Unsere Collage wurde auf dem Titelblatt der Zeitschrift Architecture du bonheur - L'urbanisme est une clef aus dem Jahre 1955 veröffentlicht.

In the mid-1930's, Le Corbusier made his first collages with paper watermarked Salubra, for which he had developed both a colour palette and a series of motifs. Of the original 30 collages that he created, Le Corbusier reproduced 19 in his large autobiographical book Le Poème de l'angle droit, 1948. For the design of these new collages, the artist returned to some of his earlier themes. In our collage, Main et silex, 1930/51, he used a theme that he had already chosen for two paintings in 1930 and 1932, which explains the two dates of 30 and 51 in this piece.
The flintstone (silex) in our composition is the prototype that Le Corbusier called Objet à réaction poétique, an organically formed object determined by chance or by nature. These objects, such as stones, sued gloves etc., that are detached from any context appear often in Le Corbusier's paintings after 1928. This collage was published on the front page of the magazine Architecture du bonheur - L'urbanisme est une clef in 1955.
