Lot Essay

'Like all the painters whom I consort with, I am obsessed by the redefining of space, through a return to classical figuration. But it is an unusual approach: it is not a question of objective space, but of seeking a true vision. These visual preoccupations are defined by means of a relationship with the work itself. I am no longer interested in creating picture-objects, simply pleasant and agreeable. For the essential point is to place a question on my canvas, even if I don't find any answers. It makes me feel secure.'

(Shafic Abboud in an interview with L'Orient-Le Jour, 7 March 1972).
