The collection has been gathered by a respected Iranian couple who were actively involved in the intellectual circles in Iran. She, an art and avant-garde music and dance connoisseur, was also a writer and renowned publisher; he, a reputable artist and art critic. When they married, the couple dedicated their lives to culture and art. Friends with most prominent artists of their time and passionate about art, the couple soon started to put together their personal collection, acquiring works they loved, regardless of their value. Sadly, following the lady's tragic death, her husband respected her last wishes and is thus selling the collection, the proceeds going to a charitable cause in her honour and memory. The selection of works, from the 1960s and 1970s - with the exception of Shishegaran's masterpiece from the 1990s - epitomises the diversity and development of Art History in Iran during that period, which happens to be the most exemplary of the 20th century. The artists represented in this outstanding collection were deeply influenced by Western art, namely French, Italian and British as they respectively settled abroad to pursue their artistic education, hence acquainting celebrated European artists and subsequently fusing a variety of style with their own Persian heritage. Upon their return to their homeland, they became at turn inspiring key figures for the younger generation, remaining the founding of the contemporary art scene of today. Lot Essay

A significant figure in the artistic history of Iran, Leyly Matine-Daftary was amongst a generation of artists who settled and studied abroad moving away from the aesthetic traditionalism of their time. Influenced by her Persian roots and cultural heritage as well as Western art that she encountered while living in London, she contributed to the development of Modernism upon her return to her homeland.

Her minimalist modernist style is indicative of her passion for graphic arts. Depicting mainly still-life works, the present painting is an outstanding and early example that is very rare and sought after. Actively involved in the Tehran Biennales and the Shiraz Arts Festivals, Matine-Daftary became one of the most admired personalities of her time and influenced many generations of artists after her.
