Lot Essay

Christie's is pleased to present another exquisite work by Reza Derakshani, an Iranian artist needing no introduction. Using a similar stylistic approach to Forgotten Fire (lot 98 in the present sale), the artist plays with his acclaimed contrasting opposites. The illustration of the widespread symbol of the tree of life, with its body rooted in earth and its crown dancing in the sky, overwhelms the viewer with a sense of humanity and unrestraint. However, the overall tones and confined frame add a sense of melancholy and heartache. With life and death at the heart of his oeuvre, Derakshani's work is truly a universe of its own.
