A Suzuribako [Writing Box] and a Bunko [Document Box]
Edo Period (19th Century)
The suzuribako decorated in gold and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi-e and kirikane on a nashiji and mura-nashiji ground, the lid with a thatched hut amongst pine trees and a bridge by the sea beneath golden clouds, the interior of the lid with a shrine and a Torii gate by the sea, the interior with a removable fitted tray, slate inkstone with nashiji rim, a gilt silver waterdropper cast as a bird in fight, two brushes, a knife, a paper pricker, an ink stick holder and a decorated inkstick: the matching bunko similarly decorated in gold, silver and red, the lid with a pavilion among pine trees with bridges by the sea, the interior of the lid with another pavilion among the pine trees and cherry blossoms with mountains and sea, the external sides with a seascape with rocky outcrops covered in pine trees, a building and two boats, all edges decorated with karakusa patterns
