Lot Essay

First shown with reeded bun feet in the firm's General Sketch Book of circa 1810, this design was probably inspired by Italian marble basins of the Renaissance and Baroque period. It is here made with Gillows' favourite scroll foot, ubiquitous in the Estimate Sketch Books from about 1825 to 1840. A very similar model was sold Christie's, Cowdray Park sale, West Sussex, 13 - 15 September 2011, lot 362.
