Lot Essay

‘HUO: Within this group of works, which appears very logical to me, what is the element of risk and what opportunities does it give?
EC: I would not know how to answer. Once I establish the structure of the painting, in effect, I only see the result once it is finished. The result is determined by various factors, there is always something unexpected, something unforeseen.
HUO: In a certain way, it is a mathematical system that nevertheless allows for some unforeseen outcome.
EC: Yes.
HUO: It is a system that, on the contrary of globalisation’s homogenised systems, produces differences, variations.
EC: Yes, even within one single dimension, variations are infinite’
(E. Castellani, quoted in interview with H. Ulrich Obrist, ‘Breaking Away from Painting’, in Mousse, no. 24, Milan, Summer 2010).
