Ambiguous Flower

Realism and abstraction seem two polar opposites; yet artist Mao Lizi has effortlessly bridged these two realms. As one of the most prominent founders of the Star Group, Mao has continuously experimented with new ideas during his stint in China and those years in France. His Ambiguous Flower collection is a rhapsody of visions after combining classical Chinese sketch-conceptualism and Western abstractionism.

Colour tonalities, crossovers, and diffusion have produced visual effects that are both static and dynamic; large patches of blank space are suggestive of Eastern insights; washes of colour are translucent and rich-textured, reminiscent of lotus leaves or quality organdies, and they attest to Mao's dexterity in executing Realist details.
