Zhou Changhiang has been working on the Complementation Series for over 30 years. Complementation series No. 170 has a rather calm composition and a base colour of subtle red - which allows the artist to further investigate the differences between operating in two and three dimensions. His enthusiasm in exploring different aspects of art has helped mold his artist language: one that is simple and steady with refined brushstrokes and balanced colours. When being immersed in Western modern art in the 80s, Zhou explored and studied its various theories, manifestos, and ideologies. He then started reviewing Chinese oil paintings from a dialectical point of view. Zhou had eventually come to a point where he bases his art on Eastern philosophy and tradition with Western influences serving as a complementary element. His unique and signature style thus emerges.
