Werner Spies has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

The present work is a design for a stage set for the play Judith, written by Jean Giraudoux. Directed by Jean-Louis Barrault in 1961 at the Théâtre de France, Max Ernst created the set designs and Dorothea Tanning was in charge of costume design.
